Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia Barrino are undeniable rock stars.  Though, neither has the typical look of a rock god. Their concert at the Microsoft Theater was extraordinary, fervid, and thought provoking.

Standards of beauty on this continent do not stand in line with the appearance of either Hamilton or Barrino. The Nordic appearance seems to be the most acceptable. Tall, blonde, and thin is the standard. Heidi Klum in her prime; this is the look many bleach, sweat, heighten and starve to attain. These standards do have exceptions.

Anthony Hamilton is short with cropped hair and a small beard. If you passed him in the lobby before the show, you would have missed him. You may have walked by him with a ticket in hand and never gave him a second look. However, when he hit the stage, he was indeed a soul brother in his own league. Hamilton had a groove that rocked the mind, body, and spirit.

Every woman in that audience was in love with him, and he seemed to love them back. The soul. There was so much soul that my afro grew 3 inches.  From the past to present, Hamilton excelled in genres of music from every period.

Fantasia was unapologetic and utterly fabulous. She did not sport a long weave or extravagant sets. But, no audience member was left wanting. Fantasia touched the soul. Her energy was endless. She went from ratchet to classy in less than 60 seconds. She sported a shiny fitted hat (like a boss) and then brought the glamor in a heart-stopping blue gown for her Broadway acclaimed “Summertime.”

She was robust and beautiful. She danced, kicked, and performed with every fiber of her being. Fantasia made me forget about any other artist. She was in complete control of the stage and the audience. Her vocal runs proved she could have been the American Idol every year. Her hair is jet black and short on the sides and in back. She is thick! Her costumes accentuated every curve, and she was gorgeous.

Fantasia is one of the best artists of our time and does not fit the mold of a classic pop star.

Influences of James Brown, Tina Turner, and the Temptations touched both artist’s performances. These influences did not embody the typical look of celebrities of their time. Nostalgia washed over the audience as disco balls lowered from the ceiling, and the concert became a basement party in the 70’s. These rock stars were not playing in the biggest venue on the block(Staples Center), but they performed as if they were.

Others in the entertainment world are breaking through traditional beauty barriers. Stars like GaboureySidibe, Peter Dinklage, and LupitaNyong’o have become Hollywood darlings without looking like the traditional Hollywood actor. Our wonderful President and First Lady are also not the typical or traditional archetype of the First Family. Our modern world is making room for all types. With the controversy of #oscarssowhite we obviously still have a long way to go.

Anthony Hamilton and Fantasia Barrino gave soulful and unique performances that resonated with their audience. The show was an inspiration to love yourself as you are. Showcase your talents no matter your appearance, and you will be recognized, praised, and loved. Despite how their non-tradition appearances, they are truly rock stars in every sense of the word.
